Happy Friday, everyone. Monday is Columbus Day. Or Indigenous Peoples’ Day. It depends on who you ask. It’s an embattled, politicized holiday, and has been since at least 1892, the first federally recognized celebration of Columbus Day. Columbus Day has always been motivated by a muddle of identity politics (especially for Italian Americans), pride in the New World, and political issues.
True Sustainability begins with Sustainable Relationships! “Indigenous” is a too general label. We, humans all originated as tribal or “indigenous” people. The conflicts which began in 1492 between cultures is complex. The complexity was due to a diametrically opposed system of values. The Natives did not possess a concept of land ownership but were territorial for their survival. In fact, spiritually they believe the Mother Earth and all upon it to be sacred, with humans only acting as “stewards.” A concept referred to biblically as well in Genesis but ignored by most of those who espouse it’s teachings. This is a deep subject and not easy to discuss without stirring up strong opinions among the misinformed. However, I believe it is a mature dialog that needs to continue. Marie Montessori discovered a key for humanity but she was opposed throughout her life both from church and state. That is another conversation that needs to continue and she realized the importance of true education and a true civilized society (I.e. non-violent) begins with the child! I dare to challenge the mass public educational system that it is by design created to manipulate children to become corporate slaves empowering an economic system of insatiable consumption which is destroying the earth’s resources in an unsustainable manner….To be Continued!
