Happy Halloween
Hi everyone,
Just a quick note this week: Happy Halloween!
Halloween actually raises some interesting educational questions: What is the proper role of pretend and fantasy in each stage of development? How do representations related to death affect different children? What’s the history of Halloween/All Saint’s Day/Samhain (etc.), and what might a maximally ambitious educational approach to this holiday look like?
I will not be taking any of these questions up here. Instead I’ll just exhort you to spend some time next week perusing some of our post-Halloween school social media feeds. Halloween costumes in our schools are great fun. Small children in costumes are adorable, and older students are often incredibly creative with their costuming, decorations, and orchestration of autumn celebrations. So: don’t forget to indulge in some Halloween-inspired social media scrolling.
Enjoy your weekends,
