Alice, my four-year-old daughter, has recently started to read. As recently as four months ago, she couldn’t independently read a board book. Now, she is reading independently and with stunning fluency, probably at somewhere around the 1st or 2nd grade level.
Thank you. Do you have any other zero cost trusted resources / channels to learn more? I put perplexity to the task but figured I would ask if you have any handy
Most early literacy approaches *do not emphasize writing before reading*. So it’s not easy to find resources to learn more. However, it is easy to do.
I suggest buying (or making, if you really want zero cost) a movable alphabet and other quality toys for *producing* alphabetic combinations, looking up Montessori presentations videos on YouTube, and setting up an iPad or other typing device for your child where they can write notes and send text messages to family members.
"The possibility and motivational appeal of writing before reading is a huge unlock, leveraging the child’s natural desire for self-expression for practice." Thanks Matt and high five Alice =)
My daughter loves writing even though she can't read, and we found it quite adorable and funny. Seems like she knows what she's doing more than her dad and I do.

I love this so much!
