Happy Friday, everyone. Over the past few weeks, a team at Higher Ground has been reviewing our retention data and digging into the various reasons why a parent may decide to leave our school. Through conversations with guides and school leaders, calls with parents, and study of withdrawal forms that parents fill out when they give notice, we’ve tried to understand and draw lessons from information across schools, programs, and regions.
Enrolment is the core of any school. It has to be seen in totality! It sits on Pillars :
Vision\ mission/ policies
Location
Parents / children
Staff
There has to be focus on all simultaneously.Harmony in all these components will generate profits.
We do we believe in let us say education for all. Then do we have trained staff hired consciously to serve the purpose? Anyone , simply any child is welcome with a lot of special needs or the most gifted one, is my staff equipped to manage success of such polarized group? Or even is it even rational to consider it?
I might envision and make it my mission to serve all but can I do it just by myself ? If not then am I motivating , exciting most important support in my people who are willing to stand by me?
Service industry is based on “managing perceptions”! Very close to preemptive contact principle !
But now if I may comes at a very later stage and is after the enrolment I would say it’s part of retention plan.
Again it’s a very vast topic and can be addressed in parts but as both a parent and an educator, seen both sides administration and classroom, I have increasingly felt making processes simple , traceable, transparent, accessible helps. Being vigilant and professional in our enrolment process, it’s very important to check who enters our door because every organization has its own cultural environment. We need to find the perfect fit. These are few basic steps towards managing perceptions.
I am not sure if I am making sense , sometimes mind races a lot. I believe guidepost can become a beacon! We just need to sort ourselves a bit with clarity of mind.
Loved it. As a mother and also as a teacher, I think the communication with parents and put them in the loop before is key to build trust in what are we doing in the environment.
Very thought provoking article!
